Huntsville Banned Homes Bicycle Tour

Join us on a bicycle tour of Huntsville’s illegal homes!

HUBS Coop and Advance Huntsville are hosting a free, one-hour guided tour of examples of illegal homes on September 22nd. Meet us outside Green Bus Brewing, located at 206 Eustis Ave SE, Huntsville, AL 35801 at 5 pm.

In 1963, Huntsville banned the construction of new dense, affordable, walkable, bicycle-friendly housing within city limits. But savvy urbanists can find examples of “missing middle” housing that predates the Zoning Ordinance.

These duplexes, fourplexes, and granny flats are examples of “missing middle” housing. Missing, because they’re illegal to build. Middle, because middle-income families can afford to live in them.

We’ll also visit a few of the stores, restaurants, churches, and offices that the people who live in missing middle homes can access without having to drive. 

This will be a very beginner-friendly tour. Expect a very slow, safe, easy ride. If you can ride a bicycle at all, you’ll have a great time. Don’t forget to bring your bike, helmet, and bike lock!
